I have a super abundant crop of gorgeous lemon balm this year! Lemonbalm or Melissa officinalis has been an indispensable denizen of my garden for twenty years. It is one of my favorite herbs for aiding and abetting good health internally and externally. I keep a supply of decoctions, salves and infusions from this herb on hand at all times. I have discovered that this herb is only potent for certain things when either fresh or extracted. The dried leaves are good for a pleasant tisane. Lemon balm has been studied for its calming and relaxing properties, antiviral properties, and even insect repellant qualities. Many rumors abound on the virtues of this super easy to grow herb. I love its delicious lemony scent. If anyone around here starts a sniffle, gets a cold sore or has a bout of anxiety or restlessness, out comes the lemon balm! I frequently slip some young leaves into summer salads and other dishes as well. I have been lusting for pure Melissa officinalis essential oil for a very long time and finally, I have indulged. It is extremely expensive!! Oh yes, I'm going to be offering some Ultimate Lemon Balm soap as a fresh Summer Soap and it will be made with the real deal, so it is going to be limited and expensive. Due to a kitchen floor redo, I have been cut off from my laboratory for a week and I can't wait to make this soap when the floor is done and my precious essential oil arrives.
