Tis the time of growing things, and you wont find me inside much-unless it's a have to! Today the project for growth was a modest little lasagna bed which I have been hoarding cardboard and newspapers for all winter. How I love that free weekly edition! I had to make do with what we had to do with, so Mom's sacked up "weeds" went between the layers of newspaper. How could she break my heart by attempting to send those rascals to some landfill when we can use them so well to fill our land here? The "weeds" are actually henbit, chickweed, and dead nettle from the dogs potty area. They were SO luscious but definitely off the menu since I just cant (nor should anyone) eat greens graced by frequent fresh dog droppings. I just raked up some leaves and other debris to hide the layered edges and reinforce the mounded mix of mushroom compost and peat on top of everything. I dropped a few corn and bean seeds in and now we shall see how it goes! As for the rest of it..the plants are looking good this year and I am so glad that I can tend them! The ruptured disc last year ruined my season so everything got neglected. Water is dear out west but not so here so far. This doesn't mean that we should waste it! Another little experiment in the garden is a sort of repurposed container drip system. When hot August comes I'm hoping to keep some roots moist in a selective manner. Will the mildly perforated plastic coffee containers work? We shall see! I certainly didn't bury them much, but I figure as I add mulch..Truly, I am a lazy sort of gardener! This is one of the dryest areas with rapidly draining soil-which seems to be great for the rosemary, but rather unfortunate for that clematis on the right. If this little experiment fails, that habanero pepper in front of the coffee can is a gonner unless I water it morning and night.
