I'm Christy, the Creator of Crafted Herbals
I have an insatiable desire to study, learn and apply knowledge. I love studying biology, human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, permaculture, microbiology, the historical uses of botanicals and other substances, and many other subjects. I love creating things that are indisputably useful. I view soap making as a modernized historical art and skill. I have dreamed of owning my own business for a very long time, and I wanted to do it debt free. This meant that I had to start carefully and so I did. I have to sell things that I care a great deal about. If I don't feel good about it, I certainly can't pass it on to others!
There is no huge warehouse filled with soap. There is no production/assembly line. The products here are made with care and individuality. I research the best natural ingredients for hard to please skin, then I contemplate combinations, make them, and test them a while. It isn't about how much I can make, it is about making the perfect servicable skin pleaser. I search for unique ingredients. I have been known to carefully harvest bits of spider webs when certain spiders are plentiful so that I might incorporate some interesting silks into soap. I like obscure archaic herbs when available too.
There is one sure fire thing that the soap here does. It removes dirt. That is exactly what it is designed to do! I might put some fancy things into my soap, but I'm not going to say that those fancy ingredients have special powers beyond simply cleansing your skin. If I were to go beyond this claim of simple cleansing, I would be attempting to sell you a drug posing as a soap. I can't do that. The FDA doesn't like that. Just because I refer to some historical or metaphysical uses for some plants or other natural substances does not in any way make those uses proven and legitimate and I do not wish for you to rely on such claims. I do have a personal belief that handmade soap filled with natural ingredients can promote harmonious skin function, but it might not be the best cleanser for everyone. My belief stems from my personal battle with adult acne. I once suffered from dreadful huge pimples as an adult and no commercial over the counter remedies were helping. I did not want to take prescribed drugs for my problem because of the risks associated with them. My body works best when it is fed right and left alone! So, I decided to do a process of ingredient elimination to see if that could help prevent some huge boils. I needed a product that was simple and removed dirt and oil buildup without irritating my skin further and I found that olive oil based soap worked really well for me. Now, I am relatively blemish free without the use of drugs as long as I steer clear of make up. Any time I slap a foundation on my face, I am guaranteed a zit, but regular cleansing with my soap seems to lessen the break outs. My complexion is not perfect, but it is much better than it was 6 years ago! I believe that my soap gives the proper amount of cleansing oil and bacteria removal to my skin for this effect. Not only was I cursed with persistent acne, I was cursed with dry skin in other places which got especially rough during winter due to the drying house heat. My dry skin likes vegetable oil based soap without synthetic fragrances much much more than artificially fragranced additive filled commercial offerings.
I am the first to use any and every batch of soap that I make. A portion of each batch is subjected to relentless drenching conditions in our bathroom to see how long it can endure, and I wash with it from head to toe, including my hair and my face.
